In Ayurveda, treatments and diet plans are designed in line with our vital energies, or Doshas. To determine this, a specialist will conduct an Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis (Nadi Vigyan). Yogi Sharath at the Lee Wellness Centre is an expert in this, and Viki Shah tells you all about her amazing experience of her Pulse reading session followed by a harmonizing Meridian Therapy session.
An Ayurvedic Pulse reading sounded like something that I needed with all the pandemic stress going around and messing up the work-life balance. So, here I was at the serene Lee Wellness Centre in Al Barsha to meet Yogi Sharath.
I was curious to know why he is called a Yogi and he explains:
Yogic evolution
Yogic evolution starts from being human to a yogi first, through the awakening of the kundalini, a yogi evolves to a parama hamsa or hans and then to a siddha; from siddha to a muni and the muni evolves into a rishi.
Yogi
To be a yogi means to live without the imaginary confines of the jail that people build around themselves, yoga means to stop the chatter of mind, to stop self-sabotaging the thought process and beliefs; to be a yogi you must breach the boundaries of physical reality and cultivate the ability to experience everything in the universe and to live in absolute harmony with environment and with the beings living in it.
Pulse reading
This is an ancient technique of diagnosis that is done by reading the radial pulse. It can accurately diagnose physical, mental, and emotional imbalances as well as diseases. Pulse diagnosis is among the most fascinating ways of monitoring interactions in the body. This Ayurvedic method can identify the disease before symptoms are explicitly visible. The practitioner places three fingers on the right hand below the wrist when taking the client’s pulse. This way he can feel the blood flowing during the expansion and contraction of the heart. This “radial pulse” is the ideal pulse for intricate pulse measurements.
Ayurveda believes that there are three types of pulse. The Vata pulse is felt under the index finger. The Pitta pulse is taken under the middle finger, and the Kapha pulse is located under the ring finger. The Vata pulse can be determined by a thin, fast, and irregular rhythm under the skin. In comparison, the Pitta pulse, is stronger and more capacious, and may have either a regular or irregular rhythm. You can locate the Kapha pulse deeper down and it moves slowly and regularly.
This non-invasive procedure of diagnosis allows practitioners to reach the root cause of health issues and not just address the symptoms. The pulse, when examined, reveals both physical and mental characteristics of an individual, while understanding the root cause of the Dosha imbalances. This tool enables the practitioner to create customized wellness regimes.
Meridian Therapy:
The Pulse diagnosis led to the discovery of certain imbalances in the doshas, and the energy channels of the body and the Merian Therapy is an acupressure massage therapy that corrects these imbalances.
This is an ancient healing practice based on restoring the optimal flow of prana or life-giving force through 12 major meridians and 108 pressure points which connects all the systems of our body together. Energy should flow through meridians freely so that we can enjoy optimal health. When there is stagnation in these meridians and their energy flow, there is imbalance in our physical, mental, and emotional space resulting in various ailments.
Meridian therapy is a hands-on healing modality which is a combination of acupressure applied on the meridians and pressure points for removing energy stagnation resulting as the part of imbalance created. Ayurvedic Oils may be used to aid the healing process.
The integration of Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis allows for a more exact understanding of the energetic states of the Organ systems and thereby a more accurate approach when using Meridian Therapy to provide complementary treatments.
My Experience:
Yogi Sharath gave me a 90-minute energy balancing Meridian therapy to correct my imbalances. The session is in a comfortable room with chants playing in the background while you lie down fully clothed, and he begins applying gentle pressure on the meridian points as he moves upwards from the soles of the feet. It feels heavenly and I feel the tension melting away as he palpates points and tells me exactly where it should be paining and where it should be not!
He explains that he works with the natural energy meridians of the body that are parts of a bio–energy system that is similar to the system that circulates blood throughout the body. The energy meridians are located on each side of the body, and each one relates to a specific organ in the body. Meridian therapy works to balance the energy flow in the body by acupressure at those points while detecting blockages and stagnant energy.
The body’s energy fields follow a line through the middle of the torso, with one on the front and the other on the spine. The other points run on each side of the body. When the energy fields become imbalanced, these points become blocked, causing a problem of dis-ease or discomfort and/or pain. To apply acupressure, he keeps several fingers close together and gently moves them in the direction of the flow of the natural energy meridian of the body. This strengthens the meridian. I can feel the knots melting away and slip into a blissful state. He does this on the back as well as the head and face and ends the session with some gentle stretches.
I feel wonderful and for the first time in ages, my body is completely pain-free! It cannot get better that that! The only down side was having to go home after the session! One would have loved to curl up and go to sleep after this amazing session!
