‘If a baby is born with a part of the body that is missing or malformed, it is called a structural birth defect. Around the world, every year over 4% of all babies are born with birth defects – from serious life-threatening conditions to long-term physical deformities. Birth defects can affect babies regardless of where they are born. Their deep psychological, social and often, financial repercussions on the child and his family are universal. Over 5 million infants born globally with some birth defect every year, 20% are in India. In a country where tradition, religion and social conformity are integral to the cultural fabric, any anomaly becomes a struggle and story. God Children – the latest documentary from acclaimed award-winning Dubai based filmmaker, Reshel Shah – is the story of two young boys who are living this struggle every day of their lives. Born with unusual birth defects that have altered the course of their lives. Documenting the courage and complicated lives of these two remarkable children, God Children opens our eyes to a world of struggle, of small victories, of big fears and everyday humour. It brings alive the universal struggle of parents trying to do their best, and of children who just want to be children. And how this struggle is compounded when the child is not ‘normal’. Tackling sensitive issues with empathy and an open mind, God Children will leave you touched and affected with its thought provoking message.’ – Producer Kish Pagarani
