Rolfing may be the answer to chronic pain

Many of us suffer from chronic or severe pain. Taking prescription drugs long-term may not be the best option to treat pain. There are alternative methods to manage chronic pain. Rolfing is one technique people with daily pain might not have explored yet and has been gaining popularity again in the alternative health community. Yogalifedigital speaks to Andrew Rosenstock to find out more.

WHAT IS ROLFING? An awareness-based bodywork treatment that focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body. Fascia surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, organs, and nerves, binding some structures together while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other. Rolfing works to lengthen, stretch, and soften this tissue to restore postural balance, ease of movement, and a feeling of being more at home in your own body. It is practiced in an organized series of sessions or individual sessions within a framework that is designed to restore postural balance by aligning and integrating the body in gravity.

WHY WOULD WE NEED ROLFING? Our bodies grow, move, and change within the constant field of gravity; when we oppose gravity inefficiently, valuable resources are wasted. Physical injuries, trauma, and the stresses of daily life require us to adapt how we move and hold ourselves upright. These adaptive patterns can become deeply ingrained—even long after they’ve fulfilled their protective and adaptive functions—to the point that basic movements like sitting, breathing, and walking are more effortful than necessary. Such prolonged effort can contribute toward feelings of stiffness, pain, fatigue, and lack of vitality.

Rolfing can be helpful when chronic stiffness, compression from injury or surgery, held postures that inhibit fluid motion, or repetitive motion are keeping your pain levels up. This bodywork is a holistic approach in how it approaches the self through one’s physical layer and can permeate through to assist with freedom of physical, psychological, and emotional blockages. It is based on the work of dr. Ida P. Rolf.

BENEFITS OF ROLFING:  Rolfing can help us learn to “let go” of chronic stress and tension, to stop fighting gravity and allow it to support us instead. Movement becomes a pleasure, breath comes easier, and “good posture” becomes effortless. We experience a sense of ease, efficiency, and grace. Many rolfing clients come to find relief from pain and discomfort along the way. While this describes some general benefits, the rolfing process is individual and personal, with a wide range of effects and benefits.

Rolfing is typically delivered as a series of Ten hands-on physical manipulation sessions called “the recipe”. It is based on Ida Rolf (the founder)s ideas about how the human body’s “energy field” can benefit when aligned with the Earth’s gravitational field. Each session according to the recipe focuses on a specific area of the body on the path to transform you completely.
