Going grey, as nature intended us for us, is the new trend. More and more A-listers are embracing the salt and pepper look with spectacular results. We experience the famed ‘Method Cut’ or ‘Invisible cut’ at the Rossano Ferretti Hair Spa in Dubai and tell you all that you need to know about going grey and stylish from the experts there.
-The change in hair with age and reasons.
Grey hairs are visible signs of ageing similar to getting wrinkles. Although stress, nutritional and hormonal factors can affect hair colour too, it is usually more genetic factors that see people’s hair turning grey. Some women start to see a few grey hairs in their 30’s and by the time we reach 50, we would expect to see around 50% of hair turning grey. Grey hair is often an inherited trait so if your parents went grey early, there is a high chance that you will also.
Hair turns grey/white due to a change in follicles. With age we lose pigmentation cells that are responsible for colour. Melanin stops being produced and the hair becomes grey/white and lifeless. Some grey hair can also be frizzy and needs moisture and hydration to tame it.
-Styling tips for grey hair
Grey hairs can be drier than the pigmented hairs so they have a tendency to look frizzy and dull. It is important to use the right products including anti-ageing serums such as Rossano Ferretti Vita Rejuvenating Serum that is formulated to fight signs of hair ageing. A powerful concoction of Cassia Angustifolia, Hyaluronic Acid and Konjac extract create a protective bio-film on the hair, keeping it looking conditioned, strong and young.
A great hair cut can also help grey hair look much better. Ask your stylist for a modern cut and keep up with regular maintenance as grey hair can become unruly if it is not tended to at least every 6-8 weeks.
Wash hair every other day to avoid build up and use hydrating products which protect against environmental factors.
Thinking about the bigger picture, women with grey hair can compliment their look by wearing silver and charcoal clothing as well as jewel tones. Beige should be avoided as this can give a washed out look. Groomed brows and a great pink or peach blush and lipstick work really well alongside grey hair.
-Advantages of toning grey hair versus colouring
Toners only lighten the hair by one shade and contain no chemicals. They are not created for toning grey hair. You can use a toner, but the hair colour will still look grey, but just a different shade of grey. Each client is different and if they do not wish to use chemicals or hair dye, then using a toner is another option to enhance or change the colour a little. To cover grey completely, colouring it is the only option.
-I read somewhere that blue hued shampoos help- please explain
Blue shampoos can minimize the yellow shade in grey hair, which can help. It can however look very un-natural and is not something we would promote.
-How to protect and take care of grey hair? Hydrating? Moisturizing?
Depending on hair type, as grey hair aside it is still all about your hair type. Whilst grey hair generally will be more dry and frizzy, people will still have thin or thick hair and this needs to be taken into account. Generally grey hair does need more hydration and moisturisation. A hydrating shampoo will protect grey hair from becoming brittle. A conditioner that contains anti-oxidants will protect the hair from UV and environmental damage. A deep conditioning treatment once a week will help to keep hair shiny and soft, rather than dull and wiry.
A regular good hair cut is also vital as mentioned above.
-Do styling products like dryers/straighteners have a damaging effect on grey hair?
No greater effect than on non grey hair, however the wiry texture of grey hair can make it brittle. Frequent blow drying, curling or using straighteners will remove moisture from the hair follicle and can scorch the hair, making it prone to breakage and frizzing. If you do need to style your hair with heat, make sure you use a protective product.
-Do serums/oils help manage dry grey hair?
Yes, very much so. By adding a serum to your daily hair routine such as Rossano Ferretti Vita Rejuvenating Serum, you will add moisture and shine, whilst relaxing the texture of the hair leaving it stronger, silky and soft. You can experiment over time with the amount of serum that you use to achieve a sleek and shiny look without weighing down the hair. Serums can also give shine as grey hair can be very dull. Use 1 drop daily and before drying, or even run through dry hair too.
-Difference between grey and white? And how do you manage hair in the transition period?
A single hair is either pigmented or white. Grey hair is actually the product of coloured hairs mixed in with the white hairs. The more white hair you have, the more grey it looks. Hair can be white at the root as it is growing out, and still be coloured half way or at the end. Embrace your new hair colour during this transition by adding some lowlights or highlights and shading to make the shift to grey feel more attractive. A structured hair cut such as a cute pixie cut can also help manage hair during this period.
-Special tips for daily maintenance of grey/white hair?
We would recommend using a great hair serum or oil as well as a protectant. When you shampoo your hair, it is also important to massage the scalp thoroughly which will take all of the vital nutrients there to feed the follicles.
Diet is also very important and a well balanced diet rich in proteins and carbohydrates will certainly be a bonus as they contain key essential minerals and vitamins. Eggs and fish are a great source of protein and will help hair stay strong and healthy. Drinking lots of water will also increase the natural moisture in the skin and hair, improving texture over time.
It is also vital to care for hair from the inside out too and there are many supplements and vitamins on the market that can assist with this. A multivitamin supplement that contains Omega-3’s would be beneficial due to the moisturising effect it has and can prevent the hair from being dry and lifeless and also reduce itching and dandruff. A supplement containing copper would also be ideal as this is known to prevent the onset of grey hair by boosting the production of melanin. We personally really recommend Biotin as a great supplement for healthy and strong hair.

My experience at Rossano Ferretti Dubai:
A casual look at the mirror recently told me a lot about myself than what I was led to believe! I actually saw myself the way I was, a 50 plus woman who was the mother of a young son! I was suddenly looking at a middle-aged woman with my hair toned to look too dark to suit my age. Is that what I wanted? Should I hang on to a frozen-in-time vision of myself and believe people when they keep telling me, ‘Oh, you look so young for your age!!’ when they do not mean it at all, or confidently make the transition into middle age? I decide to move toward reality. But then going grey meant dry, scraggy, brittle locks that did not look sleek and stylish. I always ended up looking like a mess when I least wanted it! How do I manage to rock my grey hair au naturel?
I decided to infuse some ’method into my madness’ and take expert advice and ended up at the Rossano Ferretti Hair Spa in Dubai for their famed ‘Method Cut’ (don’t worry if you haven’t heard it before, I hadn’t either!).
As explained by the stylish Method Director Elisa Pattaro, who made me feel completely at ease in 20 seconds, this ‘method’ was all about treating your hair as a whole rather than as a series of parts. This results in a haircut that is genuinely meant for you, your style, your personality and ends up suiting YOU!
The hair is cut vertically rather than horizontally using specially designed scissors, which follows the natural flow of the hair rather than forcing it into a style that’s un-natural.
The best part about this hair is that you will not require ages to style it or re-create it; it’s cut the way your hair wants to be or is meant to be so it will just go there naturally! Isn’t that amazing for someone like me who simply cannot spend ages styling hair first thing in the morning!!
The salon itself is completely fabulous – done up in a minimalist theme with comfortable, airy, sunlit rooms that are spacious and offer a lot of privacy.
Why didn’t someone tell me about them before???
In conclusion, I realise that I have a moment of revelation! I suddenly realize that my grey hair is an allegory for how I’ve lived my life until now. I am a kind of a person who loves to be in charge with a sort of an obsessive compulsion to get things done right, wanting to have control over a lot of things in life. But by letting my hair be the way nature meant it to be, I have kind of come to terms with myself and life; maybe I am learning to relax a bit and take it easy and let life go the way it was meant to be without controlling it! Thanks to Rossano Ferretti, the new me is ready to face the world with the same amount of confidence!
