Can you rewire your brain?

Imagine being able to rewire your brain without therapy or taking a pill.
Sounds crazy? Well, there’s a revolutionary new technology in town that promises to do just that and more. Dr. Upasana Gala gives us an introduction to the radical new therapy changing lives today.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also known as neurobiofeedback, is an approach used to treat individuals that struggle with psychiatric and neurological disorders by changing the electrical activity in the brain.

In the last few decades, research has shown that our brains are exceptionally malleable regardless of age, and therefore, can be stimulated and improved over time through a process known as ‘operant conditioning’ or brain training.

At the root of all our thoughts, emotions and behaviors is the communication between neurons and our brains, channeled through various brain waves. Waves that constantly change as a reflection of our mental state.

Neurofeedback, consequently, helps the brain regulate these waves using technology that lets it view its own reflection, observe it’s flaws, and then accordingly course-correct to its ideal, natural state.

This can be likened to catching your reflection as you walk past a mirror, notice a few stray hairs out of place and then choose to comb them back. Neurofeedback essentially puts a mirror up to your brain.

How Does it Work?

The most common way to conduct neurofeedback is via an electroencephalogram, commonly known as an EEG.

Electrodes are applied to a patient’s scalp and tethered to a computer-based program that assesses their brainwave activity.

The process is then completely pain-free and can be done when the patient is relaxed and watching something on TV. Every time the brain produces the desired outcome such as increased focus, it will receive a reward in the form of audio-visual feedback, be it better sound or picture quality.

Over time, the brain learns from this exercise and demonstrates long term changes in patterns and behavior.

This powerful therapy can address a litany of neurological ills, helping adults and children alike improve their memory and focus, reduce stress and anxiety, as well as help the brain fight and reverse the effects of aging.

Consequently, this ‘bio-hacking’ technique has benefited a host of patients suffering from ADHD, memory loss, chronic anxiety, insomnia, anger management, depression, learning disabilities and much more.

In fact, Neurofeedback has already garnered a lot of popularity overseas, sworn by some of the world’s foremost Business thinkers; Tony Robbins, Dave Asprey and Elon musk, as well as acclaimed athletes looking to peak their performance.

In spite of this, it’s still remained relatively nascent in the region, however, the rise of neurofeedback centers like Evolve Brain Training should ignite a paradigm shift and see more innovative therapies take center stage.
