A miscellany of retro delights with a contemporary splash of colors, forms, textures and perspectives. The city’s biggest Art Event happened in a renewed avatar during the current pandemic times and certainly did not disappoint! Priyanka Sarkar gives the verdict.
Venturing into the new normal with a total reality check, rising from a dampened spirit of Covid 19, Art Dubai 2021 stands out in more than one form! From being the first physical international event of the year after a tepid 2020, hosting 51 galleries from 30 countries to creating a sculpture, hosting single films of ace artist’s stories and the much-loved art nights, Art Dubai re-imagined and re-created the magic of large exhibits in today’s new times.
Art is very subjective. Everybody reacts differently to art and not everybody likes and appreciates the same things.
We took a trip to the galleries to spot, cherish and share our top picks across trends we loved and concepts that resonated deep with us.
Trends we loved!
– SURREAL SURPRISE
Today’s clean, mod aesthetic marries yesterday’s nostalgic sci fi dreams in crisp modern Techni color.
– NEW AGE IMPRESSIONISTS
Park built upon the foundations of Impressionists like Monet to give his art a contemporary feel through texture, light, and fine detail with a palette knife.
– ENGRAVED INTO THE ROOTS
Wonder, which came first? Does the artist help create the cultural moment they are in, or are they only a reflection of their cultural milieu? As society expands and grows, art changes to reflect its new developments. Art reflects our history and documents the crucial component of our lives. It is a manifestation of society and a reflection of people’s intricate identities.
-MILLENIAL POP
Whether its extending histories of Minimalism and Conceptual photography to account for contemporary black aesthetics or bringing the ethical and political issues of techniques and labor to a larger art world audience. Art Dubai 2021 had a full palette of artists taking claim.
-NEO CLASSICS
Expressive distortions of form and space, an important precursor of modern art.
-TECHNOLOGY AS AN ARTIST’S MEDIUM
Part of the merger of art and tech also involves using technology as a medium. Much as one would use a paintbrush. “Personally, I try to engage technology in a poetic, humanist sense, by looking for truths closer to the nature of being, and expressing them through high technology. For instance, there is a spark, when two people look into each other’s eyes. That sort of warmth of the human experience is something I think technology can enhance and extend.”
