All you wanted to know about hand-knotted carpets

We have all heard of the various terms used in the carpet sector, including machine-made carpets, machine-knotted rugs, handmade carpets, hand-tufted carpets, hand-loomed carpets and hand-knotted carpets. Today, we give you  an insight into hand -knotted carpets.

Hand-knotted carpet is an ancient art used to  create oriental carpets. There are various types of knots, such as Tibetan, Turkish, symmetrical and Persian.

We are going to explain more about  Persian hand-knotted carpets.

Persian knots are also known as  sennah or asymmetrical knots. This knotting technique is considered the most valuable of them all.

Each knot is a special technique used in tying the knots into the warps and wefts on the loom. Wefts are the horizontal threads usually made of wool, cotton or silk. Warps are the vertical threads on a loom usually made up of cotton, due to its durability. Very rarely, you will  find silk used for  the warps, as some weavers favour it.

Warps make up the fringe, these are on the two ends of a hand-knotted carpets.

What makes Persian knots so special? It is the technique in which the weaver knots the yarn, by including the warp and sometimes the weft, to squeeze in a large number of knots per square inch, in a very compact and strong manner, giving great strength to the carpet. In fact Persian knots are the strongest knotting technique, giving the carpets long life and durability.

At Zproyecto they solely use the Persian knots technique. Currently, they are concentrating on a range made using between 100-150 knots per square inch, (KPSI) although some of their bigger carpets go beyond that range. But the majority – and their customized section – are only available in the 100-150 KPSI range. The yarn used at Zproyecto is solely yarn of the highest quality Mulberry silk, New Zealand wool and Mohair.

The key point to learn here is that Persian knots are a highly valued knotting technique used for centuries around the world. Using this technique of knotting, a weaver can increase the value of knot count per square inch.

Given the time, skill, density and strength of these carpets, Persian hand-knotted carpets are considered the best, with higher quality and definition and these facts clearly justify its price.
