A world without flowers – how sombre it would be! Flowers have been around since the dawn of time, blessing us with the reminder of the beauty of nature. Can you imagine how life would be if flowers didn’t exist? Picture this – a garden with just shrubs, Valentine’s Day without roses, weddings without floral decorations, or a bride without a bouquet. A world without flowers would be pretty dull, don’t you think, says Ebraheem Al Samadi, CEO of Al Samadi Group and Forever Rose London.
It’s safe to say flowers have impacted the planet and its people in many positive ways, and have shaped our lives to be more colourful, bright and vibrant. They brighten up our homes and neighbourhoods while creating beautiful, natural aromas for us to enjoy. Here, Ebraheem Al Samadi, CEO and Founder of Forever Rose London, Forever Rose Café, and Al Samadi Group explains what life would be like if flowers didn’t exist.
Hot, hot, hot!
Studies show that without flowers, the climate would be far hotter and drier throughout the world, especially in tropical areas. Because of a process called transpiration, plants act as pipelines, consuming water from the roots and releasing it through evaporation into the atmosphere. Almost ten per cent of the moisture in the atmosphere is because of plants, with flowers transpiring more than any other variety.
Lack of colour
It’s safe to say that although different shades of green can be stunning in their own right, these can look overwhelmingly boring. The beautiful and wide array of colours seen at different times of the year from flowers are unique and powerful, as well as indicators to the specific time of year. Without this seasons would, in part, merge together, without the excitement from seeing the first bloom in spring or the stunning varieties that contrast in winter.
The air we breathe
We as humans (and all other animals in fact) breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide (CO2). Flowers, on the other hand, do the opposite. Flowers and other plants convert this CO2 into oxygen during the photosynthesis process. Without flowers, we would have a peak in CO2 levels, which is harmful not only to us but also to the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. It is safe to say, if we didn’t have flowers, it would mean a far more hostile environment.
No more bees
Flowers are essential for pollination and are greatly used in the fertilisation of plants. Without flowers, we wouldn’t have tomatoes, watermelons, peppers, beans, peas and many other fruits and vegetables. It is also a food source for bees, who help pollinate 70 percent of the food crops we eat worldwide, not to mention the plants that all animals consume. This would sadly mean extinction for many of the creatures we have on earth.
