Going Beyond the Stigma: An Alternative Approach to Mental Health Care

Have you ever felt completely out of balance, off, weird, irritable or just ‘not yourself’ ? According to research, women are two times more likely than men to experience mental health issues but, what could the cause be? Is it simply hormones? Are women more sensitive to emotions and energy? wired differently? Are they more likely to internalize their feelings? There is an array of possibilities leading to this research however, one thing is for sure, physical, emotional, and mental factors all play a role, says Rreema Aidasahnni Healer and Spiritual Coach at Miracles wellbeing.

If we look at mental health from a physical point of view, science has identified the Gut-Brain axis showing that our guts contain 500 million neurons which are connected to our brain through the nervous system and 90% of our serotonin receptors are located in the gut. This means that taking care of our gut health through nutrition affects the quality of signals our brain is receiving from our gut and this in turn affects our mood. Have you ever tried to keep a “Food Mood” diary? you may be surprised with the results.

However, nutrition is just one part of the alternative treatments toward a healthier mind, our emotional baggage and traumas also contribute significantly to our mental health problems.

When we experience a recurring trauma especially between the ages of 1 – 7 we form a neural pathway in the brain that turns that experience into a core belief and thus, you become “wired” or “programmed” to believe that the trauma is a part of who you are. This can manifest itself as anxiety and depression, worthlessness, feelings of guilt or sadness that become an underlying state of being and as women are more prone to internalizing their emotions than men, and this results in mental health issues being more prominent in females late in life.

Sometimes the symptoms are so mild and subtle that we tend to turn a blind eye and sometimes we’ve had these symptoms for so long that we believe they are our normal state of being and a part of our character. If we have experienced trauma as a child we hold onto and learn to live with traumatic symptoms for so long that they become second nature to us, they become us but they are not us.

Below are some of the less obvious signs and symptoms women can experience when dealing with mental health issues:

  • Feeling discontent or disinterested
  • Lashing out
  • Extreme guilt about small stuff
  • Forced positivity
  • Becoming overly sensitive
  • Feeling unpredictable about how we feel
  • Feeling irritable about the small things
  • Lack of energy
  • Self loathing
  • Bursting into tears over the tiniest things
  • Ruminating
  • Feeling restless or overwhelmed frequently

Being a woman myself, I would like to take this opportunity to share a small experience from my own life. About a year ago I felt disoriented and I would burst into tears over the smallest things. I couldn’t understand what was going on. In fact I didn’t even recognize it myself until a friend of mine suggested  that I might be suffering from borderline depression. When the realization hit me, I was so shocked because I had been on a self development journey for so many years, I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t noticed the signs, they were so quiet and subtle. I began working on myself with the tools and modalities that I now use with my clients, and within a few sessions I felt completely different and light. This experience made me the therapist I am today because I know first hand how difficult it can be and I want to make it my mission to help any woman that may be passing through a difficult time and being told by society it is just their hormones playing up.

Alternative healing can truly assist you in healing from the inside out, removing the traumas and repressed emotions that are harming your entire physical, mental, and emotional body.

Healing is multi-layered, reaching deep into regions where traditional medicine cannot; however, I am not negating the value of medicine but, rather than only treating the symptoms, which is often just a band aid fix, energy healing can help with resolving the root cause of the issue you are facing.

The time has come for us to look at our mental and physical health in a way that goes beyond what we’ve been trained to look at. Our emotions and experiences when left unchecked have far greater consequences than we can ever understand.

In my sessions at Miracles Wellbeing,  I use Emotion and Body Code along with other tools, to release the emotional baggage from our subconscious mind that is contributing to your challenges and life blocks. My sessions can help with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress, physical imbalances, traumas, fears, phobias, sleep disturbances and much more.

If you woke up today feeling anything other than your best self, I encourage you to look deeper and consider exploring energy healing as a starting point to become the best version of yourself you can be. I did and it was truly life changing.
