Fluid yoga flows and poses look lovely on Instagram too! But are you all familiar with the Trikonasana and the Uttana Shishosana? We guess not!

To help everyone from yoga newbies to experienced practitioners, we have Melanie Gordon, a certified yoga instructor, to help put together a definitive guide to yoga poses – a sort of a cheat sheet to mastering the common poses you’re likely to encounter in most classes.

Child’s Pose – Balasana

Child’s pose – Balasana is a beautiful centering pose and allows body rest and relaxation between more demanding yoga asanas.  The child’s pose is a most restful asana, enabling the body to restore, balance, and harmonise, putting the mind into an open space.

Kneeling on the floor with the knees together, let the bottom sit back and rest on the heels.  Try to lengthen through the spine, and exhale through the nose, tip the body forwards over the pelvis, so the forehead comes to rest on the floor.  The arms come to either side of the body with the hands relaxed.

Balasana lets the tension from the upper body melt away and gives the yogi the chance to explore inhalation and exhalation and let the breath’s natural flow be observed.  The slight pressure of having the forehead on the yoga mat adds grounding for the body so the natural energy paths can flow and become centered.  The added restful state comes from closing the eyes while in the asana.  The body’s primary internal systems can correct themselves and become at one.  This is a great asana to connect the yogi with the path of positive awareness of breath, creating a more profound holistic bliss.
