L’Atelier’s Aquafitness have added Watsu to their arsenal of wellness activities.
Wellness activities to ensure stress reduction and deep relaxation.
Watsu, also called Aquatic Shiatsu, is an alternative technique that involves manual pressure applied to specific points on the body in an attempt to relieve tension and pain. It combines elements of massage, joint mobilization and muscle stretching. It is characterized by one-on-one sessions in which the receiver is continuously supported while being floated, cradled, rocket and stretched.
What is Watsu?
Watsu is a mild form of body therapy done in warm water, combining elements of massage, joint mobilisation, shiatsu, muscle stretching and dance. The therapist supports the receiver while he/she is floating or being stretched. The deeply relaxing effects of warm water and support, combine with Watsu’s movements, stretches and massage to create a workout with a range of therapeutic benefits and potential healing on many levels.
Watsu is believed to be effective in a number of applications, helping in recovery from injuries, relief from muscular or joint pain and increasing flexibility.
The warmth and weightlessness in the water allow for a complete state of relaxation that is difficult to achieve in other forms of workouts.
The benefits of Watsu are multiple:
Short-term
- Fuller breathing
- Increased flexibility
- Reduction in anxiety and stress levels
- Muscle relaxation
- Improved digestion and sleep
Long-term
- Lower rate of respiration
- Lower heart rate
- Increased peripheral vasodilatation
- Enhanced immune system response
The 45 minute class is perfect for everyone including expectant mothers or for those of us who require extra rest and relaxation.
